Where to begin is always the hurdle when doing something you’re not good at. I’ve had a lot of people who say that to me when inquiring about working with me – I don’t know where to start. Well, it’s your lucky day – I’m giving you a list of how to get started.

  1. Pull everything out

    • I mean EVERYTHING! You want to be able to see exactly what you are about to organize, and at this moment you’ll be able to view the space in which you have to work clearly. At this point, it’s also a good idea to wipe all your spaces clean.

  2. Throw out any unused items, expired products, and start piles.

    • Essentially you want to have a keep, throw away, and donate section. If you’re working in a craft room, baby room, or the kitchen you may even want to create a space for “backstock” or those things you don’t need all the time. Make sure to label and date items when necessary.

  3. Sort and categorize what is left

    • You have 2 options here – place like items together or group those items per usage.

    • This will help you to see which containers are needed and how you will store your new groupings.

    • Your home can be its own container store so start there first to minimize spending!

    • Containers help you STAY organized. Again make sure to label as you go with a sharpie, colored paper, or label maker, use what works for you.

    • Once you have exhausted your entire home or office for usable container systems, it’s now time to head over to your favorite online retailers to order what other systems you will need. This could take a couple of trips, depending on what you’re organizing. I prefer to buy extras and return (or forget to return) what’s not needed.

  4. Put what you’re keeping away

    • For me, this is always the fun part!

    • Remember, put those things most often used towards the front for easy access.

  5. After a few weeks of using your newly organized space, it’s time to reassess.

  • Remember, it’s important that your space works for YOU! What you thought was going to work while you were organizing, may not actually work in “real life.” There’s no harm in changing it up to make it work for you. An organized space will only stay organized as long as it is effective for your use.
